Our Tidal Wave button is a tribute to “Great Wave,” the world-famous woodblock print created by Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai. The original print was part of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, which treated the iconic mountain (its name meaning “not death”) as artistic subject. “Great Wave” inspires a feeling of the sublime as a massive wave not only crashes over three, small boats but also dominates a diminished Mount Fuji located far off in the background.
This print demonstrates immense skill and artistic layering. So does our button. The Tidal Wave button features a wood inlay carefully etched to capture the details of the water and foam. Hokusai once said, “Until the age of 70, nothing that I drew was worthy of notice.” We at Artisan Obscura hope to embody that same dedication to lifelong apprenticeship.
